Con-A.2 — th8 Empirical Evidence Is Post-Hoc Narrative Fitting#

Severity: A (Fatal) | Sphere: Se1 | Target: th8

th8’s empirical “testing” consists of retrospective categorizations: Soviet communism collapsed → “violated Stable + Extensible”; unregulated capitalism has crises → “violates Life-friendly”; Nordic social democracy works → “approximates Jubilee.” This is a textbook case of post-hoc rationalization (the Texas Sharpshooter fallacy: drawing the target around the bullet holes).

Problems:

  1. Retrospective categorization. The framework decides after observing outcomes which cords were “violated.” The Soviet Union could equally be categorized as violating Life-friendly first (gulags, famines, Holodomor) and only later losing Stability. The categorization is fitted to the outcome, not predicted by th8.

  2. Underdetermination. The Soviet collapse had a constellation of causes (arms race, Chernobyl, Gorbachev’s reforms, nationalist movements, oil price drops, endemic corruption). Reducing this to “violated two cords of ax24” is compression by analogy, not explanation.

  3. No genuine prediction. th8 cannot specify which societies will fail, when, or by what failure mode. No falsification criterion exists: any system that survives can be redescribed as “approximately satisfying all three cords,” and any that fails as “violating at least one cord.”

  4. Nordic social democracy does not implement Jubilee. The Nordic model uses progressive taxation and welfare states, not periodic wealth resets. Denmark, Sweden, and Norway have among the highest wealth inequality in the OECD (wealth Gini, not income Gini).

Even in physics, post-hoc fitting without prediction capability downgrades a claim from theorem to conjecture at best. A theory that cannot specify conditions under which it would be false is not empirically testable (Popper 1963). th8 as currently framed is unfalsifiable because the three “cords” are defined vaguely enough to accommodate any outcome post-hoc.
