The Crisis#

Human societies have been living at the brink of some perceived existential crises for millennia. Talk of the extinction of humanity may even be as old as humanity itself.

A sizable literature exists on existential risks. There is no point in repeating the obvious here. This collection of Wikipedia articles on existential risk shall suffice as starting point for more interested readers.

The purpose of Balospe.com is to document and expand the insights and analyses of a professional research scientist, Dr. Laurence Loewe, who set aside his career (GooglescholarLINK) in 2020 in order to investigate potential ways to avert existential threats.

As it turns out, this temporary setting aside turned into a wid-e research marathon Dr. Loewe, it all started with

This page presents evidence for the existential threats facing humanity, drawn from LLoL’s research since 2020. This list is by no means complete —

As there is no point in repeating the obvious here, LLoL will focus on his own work since 2020 to push the boundaries of what is known.

Questions include these:

  1. Is humanity merely facing a string of bad patches or is it appropriate to speak now of “The Crisis” as in the most challenging “make-or-break” point of humanity?

  2. Is it possible to classify the various existential “sub-crises” in some principled way?

  3. Can actuarial probabilities be calculated for predicting waiting times until near certain doom?

  4. If any links exist, can ancient prophecies of doom be mapped to scientific predictions in any useful ways?

  5. Is doom and gloom inevitable or is there true hope for a path to delight and glory?

Here LLoL will attempt to answer these questions by drawing on examples from his own wid-e research marathon since 2020.

One Crisis or many crises?#

Now that more people are on the planet than ever, crises are more pronounced and better advertised. But are they different from what came before? Is there evidence of One Big Crisis that is about to decide whether humanity will die or thrive?

To answer this question is not easy. Fear-mongering abounds, but subjective fear is not the same as objective danger.

There are many other indicators of imminent existential threats, too many to list them here.

The conclusions argued in more detail from a scientific and biblical perspective can be reached in myriad other ways. For example by taking in-depth looks at sociology, various religions, modern apocalyptic movies in light of global trends, and so on.

There are good mathematical reasons for saying that the world as we know it (= humanity and life on Earth) is bound to self-destruct in any of too many ways to predict or prevent - unless something fundamentally changes.

This website is dedicated to the vision of exploring what that fundamental change might require.
