Whatever else the figure is in your tradition, it is left fully intact. The reading only makes explicit the *pattern of deception your own sources tell you to recognize*, so you are readier for it. - **A test of recognition, not a name and not a date.** This reading does not tell you who the deceiver is or when the end comes. The tradition warns against exactly that move; it gives instead a way to *recognize the counterfeit whenever and in whomever it appears.* That is the honest answer to the burning question, and the useful one. - **The self-disqualifier binds first of all.** The counterfeit is known by self-elevation --- the one who says "follow me, my way." So any proposal, including this whole framework, that would save the world "its way" while foreclosing correction is, by that very move, marked as the counterfeit. This rule is aimed at its author before anyone else. *For the reader who asks after the Antichrist and the man of lawlessness.* Something the epistles say is easy to miss and changes everything about how to read the end. When John writes of antichrist, he does not point only to a future monster. He writes that the antichrist *is coming* --- and that **even now are there many antichrists** (1 John 2:18); that the spirit of antichrist *is in the world already* (1 John 4:3). The word itself, used nowhere else in Scripture but John's letters, names first a *spirit and a pattern* at work in the present, and only then a figure in whom it comes to a head. That pattern has a signature, and Paul gives it plainly: the man of lawlessness "exalteth himself above all that is called God ... shewing himself that he is God" (2 Thess. 2:4). Self-exaltation into the highest seat --- this is the mark, the same mark from Eden and Babel forward: the creature claiming the Creator's place. And it comes cloaked, "with all power and signs and lying wonders" (2 Thess. 2:9) --- a counterfeit glory, a false salvation. **The claim to the seat, and the counterfeit of grace to back it.** So how are you to know it? Not by decoding a name, and emphatically not by fixing a day --- for of that day and hour knoweth no man (Matt. 24:36), and the Lord's own word against the date-setters could not be plainer. You are given, instead, a test you can run today: *try the spirits, whether they are of God* (1 John 4:1). The question is always the same --- does this spirit point beyond itself to Christ, or does it point to itself? Jesus warned that many would come *in his name*, saying *I am Christ*, and deceive many (Matt. 24:5). The false ones are known by the self-claim. The "I am he" is the tell. This is why watchfulness in the Gospels is never date-arithmetic; it is a way of living --- awake, faithful, at work, loving in the meantime. "Watch therefore." The one who spends the interval calculating the hour has already misread the assignment; the one who spends it *ready* --- serving, discerning, refusing the counterfeit --- has understood it. And the disqualifier binds hard here, including on anyone who would carry a warning like this one: the antichrist spirit is *self-exaltation*. So any teacher, any cause, any power that would save you by drawing your allegiance to *itself*, that asks you to stop testing it "for the sake of the gospel," has by that very move put on the mark it claims to oppose. The genuine points away from itself and submits to correction; the counterfeit gathers glory to itself and forbids the testing. Read so, the overview names in secular language what the Church has always watched for: power that exalts itself into God's seat and forbids correction, dressed as salvation. The counsel is unchanged --- test the spirits, keep watch as love and labor rather than as prediction, and refuse the counterfeit while there is time to refuse it. ..
