Here is the whole case without scripture, plus three doors for readers whose tradition already has a word for the danger. Offered not to be believed, but to be checked. *********************************** How to Avoid Creating Supervillains *********************************** 25 years after 2001, 9-11 deserves a carefully written remembrance. A day like this is not a hook, and the people it took are not an argument. Yet how much progress have we made in the quest for "never again"? 9-11 does make one question harder to avoid. Every account of how catastrophe arrives has one or more villains in it somewhere. And almost every account then spends its energy on the villains --- who they were, what they believed, how they were missed --- and almost none on the question I think matters more: *what keeps producing the villains?* I ask because "supervillain" is not a personality. If my research is correct, then **supervillain is a position:** power without anything left standing to keep it from leading to disasters (e.g. by not averting them). That reframing is not a kindness to anybody. It is a shift from a question one can only answer after the fact to one that can be worked on beforehand. Here is the core of the mathematical argument in secular terms that are easy to follow. Systems do not survive by being perfectly right all the time. They survive by staying **correctable** --- by keeping open the channel through which being wrong can still be found out and fixed in time. Any engineer who has watched technical debt compound knows the shape. So does anyone who has watched an institution slowly lose the ability to hear bad news. Now put the two together. The more power an agent holds, the fewer things are left that can correct it. So the most powerful position in any system is also the least corrigible one --- which means it is the position where an error runs longest before anything stops it. Not because of anyone's character. Because of where it sits. That is the supervillain factory, and it does not need a villain to run. It needs only enough time for a position that has outgrown its corrections. How disasters can be produced is something that can be checked. That is the whole point. Fed with the Cold War near-disaster records, the same structure leads to accidental nuclear winter --- with a median waiting time to catastrophe I would very much rather be shown wrong about than proved right (see my current work on revising Matheo-b16 to improve it to peer-reviewable quality). Fed with the question of artificial intelligence, it yields the corrigibility problem without needing any story about what a machine wants. AI researchers at leading companies worry about how this can end humanity all on its own (e.g. see https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/ckgwy1k42w4o). It also names the end-state, as Orwell so impressively described. What makes Big Brother the nightmare was not the surveillance. It is the final demand: that you affirm two and two make five *because the Party says so*. That is correction abolished --- the supervillain position with nobody left standing to correct it at all. So the practical question is not how to find villains earlier. It is how to stop building positions that nobody can correct by calling everyone back to submitting to reality. How can such a "nobody" call others to correction while reliably remaining able to accept correction and still hold enough power that accepting it costs something meaningful? That is what the Matheo body of work is about, and it is offered for attack. Because only by critiquing it can its reliability be tested. For example, here are three further doors: an :doc:`Islamic `, a :doc:`Christian `, and a :doc:`Jewish ` reading. Each runs the same secular, basic human argument first, unchanged, then adds the reading its own sources give. These readings are additive not reductive. The respective symbols are not reduced to metaphors but are taken seriously. Each view offers tests of recognition, never names or dates, because that would trap people in superficiality. Hence, one might say that not only the common secular view but also (at least) three of the most important world religions agree on structural terms. Who knows, maybe there is hope to take down the Earth's supervillain factories if all people of good will, wherever they are, combine their strengths to do it.
